Dorket Head is a hillside area with suburban housing and open land close by. In a place like this, birds nest readily in eaves and insects wander in during warm spells. Both matter to carpet beetle, whose larvae feed on feathers, dead insects and dried debris before moving on to wool carpets and clothes.
For that reason we always consider the roof space when it is accessible, alongside the bedrooms and storage areas. We confirm the pest, treat where we find larvae, and explain whether anything in the roof is likely to keep supplying them. Any nest removal has to respect the legal protection given to wild birds.
Active nests of wild birds are protected, so do not disturb them in the breeding season. Old, unused nesting material is a different matter, and we can advise on what is appropriate.
Shed skins and fine debris near insulation or old nests are clues, as are adult beetles at upstairs windows. We can check accessible roof spaces during the visit.
