Farmland on one side and the Trent on the other make rodents a fact of village life. We deal with them at Stoke Bardolph homes.
In a small village surrounded by farmland and riverside land, rats and mice are always close by, and the seasons set the pace. Harvest and ploughing push rodents towards buildings, and damp riverside ground can bring rats into outbuildings and gardens. Barns, garages and stores make easy shelters. Fallen fruit, uncollected eggs and open compost are some of the unnoticed attractions in village gardens, and tidying them quickly makes a visible difference.
We start by working out how the pest is travelling, which often means checking the outbuildings, fences and ditches as well as the house itself. After the treatment, a free prevention survey recommends practical changes, such as raising stored items, sealing feed and tidying the edges of the garden. Walls, fence lines and hedge bottoms are where rats run, so we look at these as well as doors and airbricks, because tracks show us where to focus.
Colder weather and fewer outdoor food sources push rats and mice indoors. Farmland activity can add to this. Proofing before autumn is much easier than afterwards. Do not block holes until you know what is inside, since trapped animals can cause damage, and call us so that the situation is checked properly first.
Often they are the start of it. Rodents use sheds and barns as a base, then move to the house. We check them with the main building. Look for droppings, gnawing and signs of nesting in sheds, barns and garages, as these are used as bases before rodents move to the house itself.

A house by the river and fields has more wildlife on its doorstep than most. A short seasonal checklist keeps the visitors outside where they belong.
Read the advice →A dog that spends the day in fields and along the river can bring fleas through the door by evening. Most of the eggs end up in the house, not on the dog.
