In a family home, cockroaches thrive on small things: crumbs, a damp cloth, a warm appliance. We trace where they are living and treat it, with plain advice afterwards.
Family kitchens are busy. Breakfast, packed lunches, snacks in the living room and a bin that fills quickly all leave food in places that cockroaches find at night. The insects themselves tend to be in the warmest gaps, behind the washing machine, under the cooker, around the boiler, and only show when the lights go on. Younger insects are small and pale, and can be mistaken for a different kind of beetle until they are looked at closely.
We inspect those places, confirm the species and treat the harbourages. With children and pets in the house, we explain what we apply and where, and what to avoid doing afterwards, such as wiping treated areas. Then we go through storage, bins and sealing, so the house is less appealing in future. Keeping pet bowls clear overnight takes away one of the more overlooked food sources in a kitchen.
Clear the floor of the areas to be treated, keep access to cupboards under sinks and behind appliances, and put pet food away. We explain anything else on the day and what to leave alone afterwards. A quick inspection settles the question one way or the other.
We would advise against it. Sprays can scatter cockroaches into new areas and make it harder to see where they are living. Describe what you have seen and let the inspection guide treatment. Small changes made early tend to have the most effect.
They can arrive in deliveries, boxes or from neighbouring properties and settle where there is warmth, food and moisture.

When the evenings turn cold, the rats that have been living outside look for somewhere warmer. A semi next to a park can look very inviting indeed.
Read the advice →A cockroach in a family semi comes as a shock, and the first reaction is often embarrassment. They are far more often carried in than invited.
