Mostly semi-detached housing, with bedrooms full of wool and carpets laid wall to wall, makes for a typical moth case: slow, hidden and easy to miss.
Moths do not announce themselves. In a semi near Woodthorpe Park, you might notice only a few small moths on the bedroom ceiling in summer, and months later find holes in a favourite cardigan. Warmer weather speeds up their life cycle and they fly more, so you notice them. Larvae can be feeding indoors all year in heated homes, so a summer sighting may be late news.
Pheromone traps can show that adult males are present and help monitor, but they do not remove the larvae feeding in fabric. They are most useful alongside inspection and treatment.
They mostly target natural fibres such as wool, silk and fur, particularly if items are soiled or stored undisturbed.
