Older houses beside newer infill homes make South Muskham a good example of how different the same pest can look. We adapt our search to each building.
South Muskham lies north of Newark close to the Trent and the A1. Older houses in the village may have wooden floors, big chimney breasts and long-used lofts. Newer infill homes are more likely to have fitted carpets and built-in wardrobes. Neither is safe from carpet beetle; they simply offer different hiding places.
We start by looking for shed skins, which tell us larvae have been present even if none are visible. Then we trace them to the carpets, furniture or stored items they use. Treatment is applied to the places we confirm. Because the older houses here often have chimneys, we also check cupboards beside them for fibre and dust.
They are small, pale brown, hollow and bristly, often found along skirting, in drawers and in stored fabric. Seeing them confirms larvae have been present, even if none are visible now. This is a common question and a fair one.
Neither particularly. The risk depends on carpets, natural fibres and undisturbed corners, which exist in every kind of home. That is worth checking before anything else.
Both damage natural fibres, but they are different insects with different larvae, so correct identification matters for treatment.
