On a street with both older houses and post-war homes, the flea problem often looks the same from the inside, yet the cause differs. An older property may have gaps in boards and thick underlay that shelters eggs. A post-war semi usually has fitted carpet throughout, so the whole ground floor behaves as one large nest site. When we visit, we ask about the pet, any recent move or second-hand furniture, and where the bites happen. We then treat carpets, sofas and bedding in the affected rooms and talk through a washing and vacuuming routine for the following weeks. The pet still needs a flea product from your vet. A light vacuum helps, but empty the bag or bin outside straight away so any fleas are not returned to the house. Do not shampoo carpets beforehand unless we advise, and lift bedding for washing.
