Whether you live in a Victorian terrace or a post-war flat in Hyson Green, carpet beetle larvae need the same things: natural fibre, dust and peace and quiet.
Flats and terraces call for different thinking. In a post-war flat the problem is often limited to a single room, a rug or a wardrobe, and can be dealt with quickly once found. In an older terrace, larvae may have gone under boards or into neighbouring spaces, so we spend longer looking at edges and voids.
Either way, we begin by confirming what the damage really is, then treat the carpets, edges and furnishings concerned. We will also suggest practical steps such as regular vacuuming along skirting and keeping wool and silk items in sealed containers, because these habits make a large difference over time.
The method is the same, but the area to cover is usually smaller. In a flat we focus on carpets, furniture and storage, and check whether the problem could be coming from a shared space in the building.
Larvae already in fabric may still be seen for a while after treatment, and results depend on how established the problem was. We advise on vacuuming and storage, and follow up where needed.
Both damage natural fibres, but they are different insects with different larvae, so correct identification matters for treatment.

A mouse needs a gap of only around a centimetre. In Hyson Green's terraces and post-war flats, the routes in are often pipes and cable gaps.
Read the advice →The small flying moth is not the one that eats your clothes. The damage is done by larvae, usually somewhere dark and undisturbed in a wardrobe or under a bed.
