A riverside village brings damp ground, boats, sheds and garden stores. Mice use all of them, and we check each before treating the house.
Gunthorpe sits on the Trent, known for its bridge and lock. Riverside properties often have boat stores, sheds and garages close to the water, and these are quiet, sheltered places for mice, particularly when river levels rise and ground gets wet. From there they will look for the nearest dry building. A weekend home that is left empty for stretches of the year can be an especially easy target.
We check outbuildings first, then the house, looking at door bases, vent covers and the edges of the roof. There are no call-out charges, which matters in a village where a visit can mean some travelling. They can, because a quiet building with no disturbance suits nesting, and nobody notices for weeks. Visit regularly, keep food sealed and check for droppings on return. A short check of the roof space and shed after a long absence is worthwhile.
High water and wet ground can push mice towards dry buildings, so you may see more after wet spells. Treatment depends on what we find, and sealing entry points helps reduce repeat visits. Raised storage in outbuildings helps too.
Mice can squeeze through very small gaps around pipes, vents, doors and airbricks, so even a tidy home can have them.
